It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No not Christmas. Back-to-school season! (Insert applause and cheers from parents nationwide here). Although back-to-school season is just around the corner and the carefree days of summer will soon pass, you can still keep afternoons stress-free for you and your family by keeping your kitchen fully stocked with these easy and delicious back-to-school snacks.
#1 Ants on a Log
A classic go-to snack, ants on a log is the perfect back-to-school snack. All you need is fresh celery sticks, a dollop or two of Chixi and raisins. If your child isn’t a fan of celery sticks, cut up some fresh fruit slices like apples and bananas and top with a dash of cinnamon for a sweet yet savory after school snack.
Who says breakfast is only for the mornings? If children have any breakfast leftovers before school, pop them in the fridge and serve up breakfast after school for breakfast part two. Some of our favorite breakfast recipes include:
You can even toast a mini waffle and slather it in Chixi. Yum!
#3 Energy Balls and Bites
After a long day at school, your kids may need some extra energy before hitting the books for homework and studying so whip up a batch of energy balls and bites. It’s easy! Combine Chixi, oats and a natural sweetener of your choice then get creative with other mix in ingredients like cacao powder and coconut flakes. Looking for some recipe ideas? Try these:
Tip: These homemade energy balls and bites are great to store in the freezer. Simply wrap in packs of two to share with the kids when driving them to all of their after school activities. Snacking has never been so simple!
#4 Hummus Platter
Teach your children how to eat the rainbow by arranging colorful vegetables together in a homemade hummus platter. Include broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and any other veggies you have on hand from the local community farmer’s market then include a big bowl of homemade hummus for dipping.
#5 Sandwich Cut Outs
Sandwiches aren’t just for packed school lunches. Grab some slices of bread and top with Chixi then cut out fun shapes using a big cookie cutter. Get creative and see if you can find cookie cutters that are in the same shape of the school’s mascot. Go team go!
#6 Smoothie and Smoothie Bowls
Although school is back in session, you can still channel the flavors of the summertime season and make a homemade smoothie or smoothie bowl. Grab your children’s favorite plant-based milk then blend together with fresh fruit like bananas, strawberries and a dollop your favorite flavor of Chixi. Explore different flavor combinations and toppings using layers of cooked oats, dried or fresh fruit, shredded or toasted coconut, seeds and yogurt.
Activity Tip: If your kids are truly missing the carefree days of summer, have them journal their favorite memories from summertime. If writing isn’t their thing, have them draw a picture or create a collage featuring their favorite pictures from their summertime adventures and then hang it in their room so they can see it often. You can even do the same for each season of the year to capture the memories made.
Make the back-to-school season both fun and delicious with these back-to-school snacks perfect for everyone in the family.
